Not able to open pen drive or hard disk drives

Users of Microsoft Windows Operating systems (Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7) may occurred some problems when try to deal with their pen drives ( flash drives or thumbs) and hard drive partitions. These some problems are listed below,

  • Cannot open pen drive or even not able to format it
  • Cannot open hard disk drives, drives open in a new window
  • Double click on hard disk drives gives error message or opens ‘open with’ window

Usually virus infection leads to this drive opening problem, this virus creates an autorun.inf file on each hard disk drive partitions. ( An autorun.inf file is a text file that can be used by the AutoRun and AutoPlay components of Microsoft Windows Operating systems. But it leads to problems when system infected by virus. It is healthy to disable autorun autoplay on all the drives ). So the solution is simple, kill autorun.inf and then restart your system.

Here is the steps to deal this problem,

 

PEN DRIVES

Not able to open pen drive

1. Go to command prompt, use button Windows+R, then type cmd and press Enter. Or Go through START > RUN > type cmd > Enter.

2. Type pen drive name letter which denotes your drive on my computer and press Enter. For example type G: or H: and press Enter.

3. Type attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf and then press Enter.

4. Type del autorun.inf and then press Enter.

5. Then please restart your system.

 

HARD DISK DRIVES

 

Not able to open pen drive or drives

1. Go to command prompt, use button Windows+R, then type cmd and press Enter. Or Go through START > RUN > type cmd > Enter.

2. Type cd\ and then press Enter.

3. Type attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf and then press Enter.

4. Type del autorun.inf and then press Enter.

5. Next type d: and then press Enter for d: drive partition. Repeat steps 3,4 and 5 for other partitions ( use proper drive letter on step 5).

6. Then please restart your system.
